Local guide

Historic Newburgh, Indiana

Eight miles east of Evansville, Newburgh is one of the prettiest small towns on the Ohio River. Brick sidewalks, tree-lined streets, antique stores in 150-year-old buildings, and a riverfront that locals treat like a second living room. It’s also home to Deaconess Gateway Hospital and our Barn in the Burgh property.

Quick orientation

Small town, big river

Newburgh is in Warrick County, about a 15-minute drive from downtown Evansville along the Lloyd Expressway. The town center sits on a bluff above the Ohio River, with historic Main Street running parallel to the water.

Roughly 3,500 people live in the official town and 35,000+ in the broader census area. The vibe is upscale-quaint — a lot of families, plenty of weekend foot traffic on Main Street, and a noticeably slower pace than Evansville. If you’ve wandered Madison, Indiana or Galena, Illinois, you’ll feel right at home.

What to do

Top attractions

The places that make Newburgh worth the visit — whether you’re staying the night or driving in for the day.

Walkable downtown

Historic Main Street

Brick sidewalks, antique shops, boutiques, and home stores in 150-year-old buildings, all overlooking the Ohio River. Walkable end-to-end in 30 minutes — though stopping is the point.

Family-friendly

Friedman Park

A 175-acre regional park with paved trails, a stocked fishing lake, kayak launch, dog park, splash pad, big playground, and an amphitheater that hosts free summer concerts.

On the river

Newburgh Lock & Dam

Watch barges work their way through the lock at one of the busiest stretches of the Ohio. Adjacent Old Lock Park has playgrounds and a small history center.

Outdoors

Warrick Trails

A paved multi-use trail network connecting Newburgh's parks, schools, and neighborhoods. Excellent for biking, running, or pushing a stroller — and several of our Newburgh properties (including Barn in the Burgh) sit right on it.

Outdoors

Riverfront walkway

Newburgh's stretch of the Ohio River walkway is wide, well-lit, and stretches alongside historic Main Street. Sunrise, sunset, or a coffee stroll — it all works.

Events

Public square & festival lawn

The town's central public square hosts festivals, the summer farmers market, and seasonal pop-ups. Programming runs heaviest May through October.

Where to eat & drink

Local favorites

Newburgh’s scene is smaller than Evansville’s, but the local favorites have been here long enough to count on. Here are the spots we send guests to first — mostly riverfront and Main Street walkable.

Where to eat

Cafe Arazu
Middle-Eastern fusion in a bohemian space on Jennings Street. Deck overlooks the Ohio River. Shawarma, gyros, butter chicken.
The Tin Fish
Independent seafood spot since 2007, in its newer State Street building. Oysters, daily-fresh fish, indoor and outdoor seating.
Knob Hill Tavern
Frying catfish 'fiddlers' on Hwy. 662 since 1943 — paired with corn sticks and a fishbowl of beer. The 'hot fiddler' sign is iconic. (2024 EL Best Catfish.)

Pizza

Pizza King
Indiana institution since 1958. Don't skip the strombolis — those are the move.
Turoni's Pizzery & Brewery (Newburgh)
Cracker-thin pies and house Thunderbolt Red Ale, easier parking than the Evansville flagship.
Fat Daddy's
Newburgh neighborhood pizza standby.
Archie & Clyde's
Newburgh local. Reliable, dependable, locals' choice.
Pizza Chef (Boonville)
Worth ordering from if you're staying at the Barn — quick delivery and exactly what you want for a group night in.

Coffee, doughnuts & bakery

Donut Bank
Evansville's homegrown doughnut chain since 1967. The Newburgh drive-thru opens before sunrise. Cinnamon twists and the apple fritter are the move. (EL Best Doughnuts.)
Cleo's Bakery
Breakfast, brunch, and pastries with an Ohio River view from Jennings Street. Scratch baking, walkable from the public square.

Breweries

Myriad Brewing Co.
Newburgh's flagship local brewery. '812' cream ale, IPAs, covered patio, outdoor garden, food trucks on rotation, live music Saturdays. Family- and dog-friendly.

New openings move faster than we can update here.  Historic Newburgh, Inc.  keeps a current downtown directory of restaurants, wine bars, and bakeries. Or text Nathan for a personal pick tied to your itinerary.

Annual events

Festivals, markets, holiday weekends

Downtown Newburgh hosts a steady mix of seasonal festivals, wine walks, farmers markets, holiday events, and family-friendly gatherings throughout the year. The Saturday farmers market on the public square runs through the summer; Christmas-week luminaria and gallery walks light up Main Street in early December.

The most reliable place to see what’s happening during your stay is the official calendar at Historic Newburgh, Inc. — they organize and promote most of the standing events you’ll want to know about.

Why visitors come to Newburgh

Who we host

Newburgh draws three pretty distinct kinds of stays. If any of these describes your trip, ask us about weekly rates.

Hospital families

Deaconess Gateway Hospital sits just off the Lloyd Expressway in Newburgh — a major regional facility with a heart hospital, women's hospital, and trauma center. We host families visiting loved ones, traveling nurses on multi-week contracts, and out-of-town patients coming for specialist care. Ask about weekly and monthly rates.

Day-trippers & weekenders

Newburgh draws weekend visitors from across southern Indiana and the Tri-State for Main Street browsing, riverfront walks, and time at Friedman Park. Our 1BR RiverTown Retro apartments and the Barn are popular for short getaways.

Gatherings & celebrations

The Barn in the Burgh — our 12-sleeper barndominium — is bookable for daytime blocks (Sunday through Thursday) for birthdays, showers, family reunions, and graduation parties. Up to 80 guests with our tables and chairs.

Holiday World families

Holiday World & Splashin' Safari is 45 minutes north in Santa Claus, Indiana — and lodging within 30 minutes of the park is genuinely scarce. The Barn (sleeps 12, full kitchen, in-unit laundry, AC, ping pong, cornhole) is a popular post-park crash spot for multi-family groups.

Logistics

Getting here & getting around

Newburgh is about 15 minutes from downtown Evansville along the Lloyd Expressway, and roughly 20 minutes from Evansville Regional Airport (EVV) north of town. Most visitors arrive by car — Newburgh is car-friendly with easy parking on Main Street and dedicated lots near the riverfront.

Once you’re in town, almost everything downtown is walkable. The Warrick Trails system makes biking easy too, especially from the properties that sit directly on the trail. For Friedman Park, Deaconess Gateway, or anything off Main Street, a car is the simplest way to get around.
