Local guide

A local’s guide to Evansville, Indiana

Indiana’s third-largest city sits on a wide bend in the Ohio River, anchoring the southwestern corner of the state. Known for its downtown riverfront, the legendary West Side Nut Club Fall Festival, a punchy food scene, and arenas that pull big-name concerts and sporting events — here’s how locals would tell a friend to spend a weekend.

Quick orientation

Get your bearings

Evansville is about 120,000 people in the city proper, with a metro area around 315,000 — large enough to have everything you need, small enough that you’ll see the same faces twice in a weekend. The city sits on the Ohio River, directly across from Henderson, Kentucky.

Downtown Evansville

Riverfront, the Ford Center, Old National Events Plaza, Bally’s Casino, and dining along walkable historic streets.

East Side

The University of Evansville (UE), Eastland Mall, and most of the city’s big-box retail.

West Side

The University of Southern Indiana (USI), Burdette Park, the Franklin Street corridor, and home of the Fall Festival.

North Side

Quiet residential neighborhoods stretching out toward Evansville Regional Airport and the Toyota plant in Princeton.

Headed to Newburgh too?

We’ve got a separate guide for the historic riverfront town.

Eight miles east, where Deaconess Gateway and the Barn in the Burgh live. Smaller scale, walkable Main Street, antique shops, and the Ohio River right there.

What to do

Top attractions

The places we send friends and family when they’re in town for the weekend.

Concerts & sports

Ford Center

Evansville's 11,000-seat downtown arena hosts the biggest national tours passing through the Midwest — Garth Brooks, Eric Church, Kid Rock, the Eagles, Carrie Underwood — plus the Evansville Thunderbolts (SPHL hockey) and the UE Purple Aces men's basketball team.

Family-friendly

Bosse Field

Third-oldest professional baseball park in the United States, opened in 1915 — you may have seen it in A League of Their Own. The Evansville Otters (Frontier League) play here summer evenings. Beer, peanuts, a sunset over the river.

Family-friendly

Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden

70 acres on the North Side with the centerpiece Amazonia rainforest exhibit — orangutans, jaguars, capybaras, and a walk-through bat cave. Affordable, kid-friendly, never too crowded.

Arts & culture

Evansville Museum of Arts, History & Science

Downtown on the riverfront. Rotating art exhibits, a transportation gallery, and the Koch Immersive Theater — a state-of-the-art planetarium worth carving out time for.

Arts & culture

Reitz Home Museum

Walking distance from the Evansville Museum. Remarkably preserved Victorian-era mansion and one of the finest of its kind in the Midwest. Tours run year-round.

Family-friendly

Children's Museum of Evansville (cMoe)

Three floors of hands-on exhibits inside a beautifully renovated historic building downtown. Great for kids 2–10 and a lifesaver on a rainy day.

Outdoors

Riverfront & Levee

Wide paved walkway running over a mile along the Ohio River. Views of Bally’s Casino and the bridges to Kentucky. Pick up an evening coffee from a Main Street shop and walk it.

Arts & culture

Old National Events Plaza & Victory Theatre

Adjacent to the riverfront. Hosts Broadway tours, comedy shows, conferences, and major trade events. The Victory Theatre is a beautifully restored 1920s-era venue.

Where locals eat & drink

A starting list

Evansville’s restaurant scene has grown a lot in the last decade. Downtown alone, you can walk to dozens of independent spots. Here’s where we’d start.

Where to eat dinner

Bru Burger Bar
Best burgers downtown. Full bar, lively scene at the old Greyhound depot on Sycamore.
NANDO Wood-Fired Steak & Seafood
Downtown's steakhouse. Wood-fired everything, South American influence, dark-wood room on Main Street.
House of Como
Lebanese-and-steaks supper club on the West Side, open since 1960. Christmas lights up year-round, kibi alongside a perfect T-bone. (2025 EL Best Steak.)
Gerst Bavarian Haus
Bavarian beer hall and restaurant in a brick building on Franklin Street. Schnitzel, sauerbraten, German lagers, long communal tables, beer-stein energy.

Pizza

Turoni's Pizzery & Brewery
Cracker-thin since 1963. Order Thunderbolt Red Ale with the pie. Three locations including downtown Main Street.
Pangea Kitchen & Pizzeria
Wood-fired Neapolitan and Detroit-style. Scratch gelato afterwards.
Pizza King
Indiana institution since 1958. Don't skip the strombolis — those are the move. Multiple Evansville locations.
DiMaggio's
East Side Italian + pizza neighborhood spot. Family-run, low-key, reliable.

Brunch & breakfast

Comfort by the Cross-Eyed Cricket
Main Street brunch institution. Bread pudding French toast is the order. (2024 EL Best Brunch.)
The Hornet's Nest Steakhouse
Former saloon and dance hall outside town. Fishbowl Bloody Marys, brioche French toast. (2025 EL Best Brunch.)
The Rooftop
Weekend brunch with a downtown view from MLK Jr. Blvd. Honey-glazed fried chicken on biscuits, build-your-own mimosas.

Coffee shops & doughnuts

Donut Bank
Evansville's homegrown doughnut chain since 1967. Drive-thrus open before sunrise across the metro. Cinnamon twists and the apple fritter are the move. (EL Best Doughnuts.)
Honey Moon Coffee Co.
Four locations across town. Try the lavender-honey Honey Moon Latte with a Hong Kong bubble waffle. (Best Local Coffee Shop four years running.)
Penny Lane Coffeehouse
Downtown coffeehouse and unofficial work-from-home HQ since 1992. Live music nights, big tables, no-pressure all-day vibe.
River City Coffee + Goods
Main Street coffee bar and locally made gift shop in one. House syrups, Quills beans from Louisville, Evansville-branded merch.
Parlor Doughnuts
Layered doughnuts and a real coffee program. Started here on Main Street in 2019 — HQ still in Evansville.

Breweries & cocktails

Damsel Brew Pub
Brewpub on the near west side at 209 N. Wabash. Real kitchen — try the scotch eggs. Family-friendly.
Haynie's Corner Brewing Co.
Small taproom anchoring the Arts District. Trivia nights, Irish music jams, no pretense.
Mo's House
Evansville's cocktail destination — refined room, seasonal drink program, bartenders who actually know what they're doing. (2025 EL Best Cocktails.)

Dessert & sweets

Stephen Libs Finer Chocolates
Two-generation chocolatier on the East Side. Turtles, melt-in-your-mouth cremes, chocolate-covered potato chips. (2025 EL Best Sweet Tooth.)
Lic's Deli & Ice Cream
Local since 1950. Five Evansville and Newburgh locations, scratch ice cream — the Dream Shake is the move. (2024 EL Best Milkshake.)

Annual events

Time your trip to a festival

From May through October there’s a downtown festival nearly every weekend. The ones below are the marquee annual events; for everything happening downtown during your stay — wine walks, sidewalk sales, food truck nights, holiday events — check the official calendar at Downtown Evansville.

June

Shrinersfest

Riverfront festival with air shows, fireworks, hydroplane racing, and a big-ticket country music headliner. One of the city's signature events.

August

Ohio River Bluegrass Festival

A long weekend of bluegrass on the riverfront. Bring a folding chair.

August

Frog Follies

One of the biggest classic car shows in the Midwest. Thousands of pre-1949 hot rods on display.

October

West Side Nut Club Fall Festival

The second-largest street festival in the United States, behind only Mardi Gras. Six days of food booths (try the brain sandwich at least once), live music, and parades. A city-wide event.

Why visitors come to Evansville

Who we host

Business travelers

Evansville is home to Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana (Princeton, just north), Berry Global, Old National Bank headquarters, and Mead Johnson / Reckitt. Our downtown properties are 5–15 minutes from most of them, with high-speed WiFi and dedicated workspaces.

Hospital families

Three major hospital campuses: Deaconess Midtown, Deaconess Gateway (in Newburgh, 8 miles east), and Ascension St. Vincent Evansville. We regularly host families visiting loved ones, traveling nurses on 13-week contracts, and out-of-town patients coming for specialist care.

Extended stays →

University families

The University of Evansville (UE) sits on the East Side, and the University of Southern Indiana (USI) anchors the West Side. Move-in weekends, parents' weekends, and homecomings are popular times to book — plan ahead. Our downtown properties are roughly 10 minutes from either campus.

Logistics

Getting here & getting around

Evansville Regional Airport (EVV) sits 10 minutes north of downtown, with direct flights to Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, and Houston. Most visitors rent a car at the airport — Evansville is car-friendly with easy parking everywhere, including downtown.

That said, if you stay at one of our downtown properties, you can walk to dinner, the Ford Center, the riverfront, the Evansville Museum, and most of Main Street. A car helps for the zoo, the Reitz Home, and anything on the East or West Side.
